Brighthill Farm graduate Alpha Centauri wins on debut
25 Nov 2012

wo races after Oriental Pearl’s winning debut, fellow Kiwi-bred three-year-old Alpha Centauri (NZ) (Keeper) followed suit when taking out the second division of the Initiation Stakes. Although scoring in equally impressive style, with a winning margin of 1½ lengths and 1¼ lengths back to third, Alpha Centauri’s time of 1:11.60 was overshadowed by the 1:10.75 recorded by Oriental Pearl.

With trainer Mark Walker still in New Zealand after attending the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale, assistant Gus Clutterbuck said the gelding was a nice horse who had continued to impress the stable with his work.

"He didn’t spring the gates as well as he had in his trials but he was able to get up there quite easily," said Clutterback. "I’m really pleased with how he went about his work and he ran it out well to the line.

"He’s given us the impression that he’s a horse with plenty of ability. While his times in his trials and his work might not have been great he does do things easily. It’s always good to win with them first-up although we have to remember his time tonight was a lot slower than the other division winner."

Apprentice jockey Shafiq Rizuan said he was always confident of success after being able to get up outside the leader easily.

"Racing tonight woke him up a bit," said Shafiq. "He travelled well throughout the race and when I asked him to quicken at the top of the straight he did so easily.

"He’s a nice horse and everything went super with him tonight."

Alpha Centauri was foaled and raised at Brighthill Farm, he was a gorgeous foal and furnished into the most gorgeous yearling.
